The day would start at 7 am. My sister maria would rise and put coffe on and then she would begin the routine that would take up the next eleven years of her life. She would go to my mother and make sure that she was fed and cleaned and then she would administer the prescription meds mom needed to stay well. Mom had the beginning of Alzheimers disease. The onslaught was mild Mom had moments of forgetfulness and at times was confused but as the days passed it progressively got worse.
After three years my Mom began not recolgniseing us and she would now be needing around thye clock care. Both my sisters would step up to the plate and moved my mother in with Maria. Nina had a husband and home of her own to carew for so Maria would do the morning shift and Nina would come later to help. Now our Mother had begun to relieve herself in bed and she was bedridden. each morning Maria would help her to the shower aqnd change her into clean clothes and then would feed her breakfast. Nina would then come after tending to her own house and clean and change her again if she needed to be and then feed her lunch. Nina would stay til the early afternoon and then return to cook dinner for her husband.
There were one or two occasions where Maria would despair and as tears ran down her face she still took care of our Mom. Then the two girls would begin to lash out at each other and tempers were sometimes short but both of them kept on careing for our Mom. Because I saw how hard and how much both girls were sacrificing to care for Mom I suggested that we put Mom in a nursing home. This would relieve the stress and perhaps they could resume their normal lives but they both said they have seen what happens in nursing homes and they would never subject our beautiful Mom to such treatment and so day in and day out for a total of eleven years my two sisters cared for our Mom with a devotion and love that is unparalled in my eyes and I have asked God to Bless them both and soothe their souls and they deserve some kind of medal for being heroes because they allowed my Mom to live out her life with family and in her own home. Thank you Nina Thank you Maria I pray God blesses you in your life and holds you and comforts you. You are my heroes.
